Lawyers, civil society members march to Islamabad on foot
LAHORE: A ‘Paidal March Karwan’ of lawyers and civil society representatives, for the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui and 10,000 other missing persons, left for Islamabad on foot on Saturday. Representatives of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Lahore High Court Bar Association and Lahore Tax Bar Association, besides members of civil society, were a part of the procession. It was led by Syed Azhar Hussain Shah and his deputy Rubina Mah Para. The caravan would reach Islamabad on August 14 to present a memorandum to government officials in front of parliament building. SCBA Secretary Raja Zulqarnain, speaking on the occasion, said the lawyers had taken this initiative as political parties were not playing their due roles on the issue of the missing persons because they had pledged the country’s sovereignty to America. He claimed that people from all walks of life would join the walk and it would turn into a historical march by the time it reaches Islamabad. Zulqarnain said the aim of this march is to make the local leaders realise about their concern and give out a message to the world that the society was concerned about the disappearance of its citizens. staff report
